The Filters button above the result list opens a panel that lets you narrow voicings down to the ones you can actually play. Difficulty, fret range, and voicing type are available on Free; the deeper filters — open chords only, hide barres, choose which strings, max fret span, max fingers, which fingers to use, inversions, bass note, and string pattern — are part of Pro. See the pricing page for the full Free vs Pro list.

Difficulty

Pick the level you're comfortable with from the Difficulty dropdown — Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. The setting caps which voicings show up, and also limits the fingerings Fretscape allows for each shape, so Beginner shows the fewest voicings, Intermediate adds more, and Advanced shows everything. The label on each card shows the rating of the easiest fingering Fretscape has for that voicing. See What do Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced mean? for what each band actually involves.

Fret range

The dual slider sets the lowest and highest fret a voicing can use. Drag the two handles to a fret window, or use the Open, Mid, and High preset buttons to jump straight to a zone.

Open chords only

Flip this on to limit the list to voicings that use at least one open string and stay near the nut. Off, you see open shapes alongside movable ones. See How do I see only open chords? for the full walkthrough.

Allow barre

On by default. Switch it off to hide every voicing that requires a barre — useful if you're working around finger fatigue, or learning chords without the barre technique yet.

Position (Max Fret Span)

The biggest gap between your lowest and highest fingered fret in a voicing. Lower numbers find more compact shapes; Any lets the widest stretches through. Drop this down if you're working with smaller hands or want to avoid stretches.

Strings

Tick the strings you want a voicing to use, then choose how strict the match should be:

  • Exact — the voicing uses exactly the strings you ticked, no more and no fewer.
  • At Least — the voicing must include the ticked strings, but may use others too.

The Count boxes underneath let you cap the total number of strings in the voicing. Use this to find three-string shapes for fingerpicking or full six-string voicings for strummed parts.

Shape & Sound

  • Inversions — choose Root position (root is the lowest note), 1st inversion (third in the bass), or 2nd inversion (fifth in the bass). See What's an inversion and why use one? for the explainer.
  • Voicing TypeAll shows every shape, Full voicings keeps four-, five-, and six-note chords, Triads restricts to three-note shapes.
  • Bass Note — pin a specific note as the lowest in the voicing. Useful for working out slash chords like D/F#.
  • String PatternAdjacent finds voicings on neighbouring strings only, Skipped finds shapes that skip a string, Any allows both.

Fingering

  • Max Fingers — cap the number of fretting fingers used. Set this to 2 or 3 for simpler shapes, or Any for the full list.
  • Allowed Fingers — untick any finger you don't want to use. Untick 4 (Pinky) for shapes that don't ask for the little finger; untick T (Thumb) to exclude voicings that need a thumb-over fretting hand. Thumb fingerings only appear on Advanced difficulty, so unticking T makes no visible difference on Beginner or Intermediate.

Resetting filters

Filters stay set as you search for different chords, so you only need to dial them in once per session. Tap Reset All Filters at the top of the panel to clear everything back to defaults. You can also tap the heart icon next to the FILTERS header to save the current set as a preset for quick recall later — available on both Free and Pro.
