The fastest way to find a chord is to type its name — Am7, Cmaj7, G/B — into the chord search box at the top of the app. Fretscape returns every reasonable way to play that chord on the neck, ranked by difficulty. If you don't know the name, use the chord builder buttons just above the search box and build the chord one piece at a time.

Type the chord name

Open the app, tap the Type a chord... box, and start typing. Fretscape understands the usual shorthand:

  • Roots and accidentals: C, D#, Eb, F#, Bb
  • Qualities: maj, min (or m), dim, aug, sus2, sus4
  • Extensions: 7, maj7, 9, 11, 13
  • Alterations: b5, #5, b9, #9, #11, b13
  • Slash chords for a specific bass note: G/B, D/F#

Press Enter to commit the name. Fretscape reads it, fills the builder buttons in to match, and loads the voicings underneath.

Build it with the buttons

If you're not sure how to spell what you're hearing, use the chord builder above the search box. Tap a root note (C, D, E, F, G, A, B and the ♯ / ♭ modifiers), then a quality (maj, min, dim, aug, sus2, sus4, or 5 for a power chord). Add extensions and alterations the same way.

The current build shows under the Building label — for example, tapping A then min reads = Am. Voicings load straight away with each tap — no need to press Enter when you're using the buttons. Tap Clear to start over. The Type a chord... box mirrors what you've built, so you can switch between the two as you go (the box only writes back to the buttons once you press Enter).

For deeper builder topics — extensions, alterations, omits, dual naming, and the rest — browse the Chord Builder category.

What the results show

Each result card is a single voicing — one way to play the chord. The card shows:

  • The fretboard diagram, with finger numbers in the circles, an X over strings you don't play, and O for open strings.
  • A difficulty label — Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced.
  • Short tags that describe the shape — Open, Movable, High Position, Compact, and others — so you can spot the kind of voicing you want at a glance.

Tap the play button on a card to hear it through your device. Tap the diagram itself to open a larger view with the notes spelt out. Use the Filters button above the results to narrow the list — see What do the filters do? for the full set.

On Free, you see up to 5 voicings per chord. Pro lifts the cap and unlocks the deeper filters — see Why am I only seeing 5 voicings? for the detail.
